Introduction
Power generation sources can be classified into conventional and renewable sources.
Conventional sources include fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and
coal. Renewable sources include hydro, wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, wave
and tide power. In addition Nuclear power is also used for generation of
electricity.
Growing population and expanding industrialization in the Asia
Pacific is increasing demand for power while the conventional power generation
sources are limited in nature.
This supply constraint of conventional sources
has caused a rise in price at which power generated from conventional sources is
available to domestic and industrial users in these countries.
|
|
Besides, Asia is also dependent on oil imports for its power needs.
|
Oil is
imported largely from the Middle East which has had an unstable
political climate over several decades. This means that there are
uncertainties as to the stability of oil supplies.
To develop self
sufficiency in power generation, many countries in Asia are trying to
develop renewable energy sources.
Rising oil and gas prices and global warming due to conventional power
generation are highlighting the importance of solar energy in Asia.
Solar energy causes the least environmental impact and does not involve
the combustion of any fuels... |
